Despite the role she has played in the operation in Fontaine, Arlecchino finds herself faced with the messiest part: the cleanup, involving the disappearance of one Furina de Fontaine. Her body sleeps, they say, but her soul is lost in the depths as she stays in her catatonia from the Iudex's final trial. But Arlecchino is first and foremost the Father of her House of the Hearth, and her children's safety comes first. When Freminet gets injured by a rogue programme on one of his dives, her investigation leads her to an old opponent...
Furina is injured, tired, and wishes to escape, but the Fatui have one final task for her.
As Arlecchino's cyborg body slowly falls apart, she ponders what it means to be herself. Furina, locked into a deal with the very organisation she is trying to outrun, thinks about what it means to exist.
